Patients often describe phantom limb pain in various ways, ranging from sharp, electric-like shocks to dull aching, cramping, or a sensation of the limb being twisted in an uncomfortable position. The intensity and frequency of the pain often fluctuate, sometimes triggered by weather changes, emotional stress, or pressure on the remaining part of the limb, known as the residual limb or stump. Mirror therapy is a particularly effective technique where a patient watches the reflection of their intact limb in a mirror, creating a visual illusion for the brain that the missing limb is moving freely and without pain. This helps to 'retrain' the brain and can reduce the intensity of phantom sensations over time. Additionally, physical therapy to desensitise the residual limb and the use of prosthetic devices can provide sensory feedback that helps the nervous system stabilize.

These interventions aim to dampen the abnormal electrical activity within the nervous system that sustains the chronic pain cycle.

These psychological factors can, in turn, lower a patient's pain threshold, creating a difficult cycle to break.
