Living with Neuropathic Pain After Cancer Treatment

Burning feet after chemotherapy, or a tight band of pain after breast surgery — nerve pain is real, common and treatable.

Many patients finish cancer treatment successfully and are then puzzled by a new kind of pain: burning, tingling, numbness, or electric shocks triggered by the lightest touch. This is neuropathic pain — pain from injured nerves rather than injured tissue — and it needs a different approach.

Common patterns

  • Chemotherapy-induced neuropathy: symmetrical burning or numbness in feet and hands
  • Post-mastectomy pain: tightness, burning or shooting pain in the chest wall, armpit or inner arm
  • Post-thoracotomy pain: a band of pain along a surgical scar on the chest
  • Radiation-related pain: gradual onset in the treated area, sometimes years later

Why ordinary painkillers disappoint

Paracetamol and anti-inflammatories act on inflamed tissue. In nerve pain the tissue may be healed while the nerve continues to fire abnormally. Treatment therefore uses medicines that quieten nerve signalling, started at low doses at night and increased slowly to limit drowsiness.

What else genuinely helps

Graded exercise and physiotherapy maintain circulation and reduce sensitivity. Topical agents help localised patches. Attention to sleep and mood is not psychological dismissal — poor sleep measurably lowers pain thresholds. For selected patients, nerve blocks or radiofrequency treatment provide substantial relief.

Practical safety advice

If your feet are numb, check them daily for cuts and blisters, test bath water with your elbow, and wear well-fitting closed footwear. Reduced sensation means injuries can go unnoticed.

Set fair expectations

Nerve pain usually improves gradually rather than disappearing overnight. A 30 to 50 percent reduction in pain, with better sleep and easier walking, is a genuine success — and often the foundation for further improvement.
